Pandit Jasraj was one of the most distinguished Hindustani classical vocalists of his generation and a major exponent of the Mewati gharana. Born in Pilimandori in present-day Haryana, he came from a family with a long association with Indian classical music. His father, Pandit Motiram, began his musical training but died when Jasraj was still a child. His elder brother, Pandit Maniram, subsequently guided his development as a vocalist, while his brother Pandit Pratap Narayan introduced him to tabla. His rise as a concert vocalist began in the early 1950s, with a significant performance in Kathmandu in 1952 before King Tribhuvan of Nepal. Over the following decades, he developed a distinctive interpretation of Hindustani khayal, distinguished by tonal richness, careful diction, controlled melodic elaboration, and an intense engagement with the meaning of the text. Jasraj was also a prolific composer. He created more than 300 bandishes, while drawing upon the poetry of major Indian saint-poets and incorporating Sanskrit devotional texts into his repertoire. Among his most distinctive musical contributions was "Jasrangi," an innovative form of jugalbandi inspired by the ancient concept of moorchhana. His influence continued through teaching. Jasraj trained generations of musicians, including Sanjeev Abhyankar, Kala Ramnath, Tripti Mukherjee, Suman Ghosh, Sandeep Ranade and others, while supporting institutions dedicated to the teaching and international propagation of Hindustani music. His contributions earned the Padma Shri in 1975, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987, the Padma Bhushan in 1990 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2000. He died in New Jersey in 2020 at the age of 90, leaving behind an extensive recorded legacy, a distinguished lineage of disciples and a lasting contribution to Hindustani vocal music.
